History of St. Patrick’s Day
Like most holidays, St. Patrick’s Day has an interesting history that everyone should read up on. The celebration of Irish heritage and culture takes place annually in communities around the globe. There’s a lot that one can learn from studying the history of a holiday celebrated on an international scale!
The history of St. Patrick’s Day starts with the birth of Patrick himself around the year 400. He was born to a Roman-British officer, but didn’t get the chance to grow up like most children do. Instead, he was kidnapped by pirates at a young age and sold into slavery. After spending six years imprisoned in Ireland, he dreamed of God telling him to escape.
After escaping the prison, he made his way to France where he joined a monastery. After 12 years of studying and achieving the rank of bishop, legend states that he was told by God to return to Ireland. He did just that, and with the pope’s blessing to boot!
Once in Ireland, he converted the masses to Christianity and helped set up schools and monasteries. He was arrested many times, but escaped and continued working to help the Irish people.
We here at Trent Cadillac Buick GMC look forward to celebrating St. Patrick’s Day next month!
